Between 1850 and 1907, the US Mint struck the Liberty Head Double Eagle, the 20-dollar coin bearing the head of Liberty as a symbol of freedom. Of all the gold coins that the mints of the United States struck for circulation at the time, it carried the highest face value. It holds almost an ounce of gold and a great chapter of American history.

A coin from the days of the Gold Rush

The introduction of the 20-dollar coin dates back to the years of the California Gold Rush, when large quantities of gold from the West reached the mints. Its name is quickly explained: the ten-dollar coin was already called the Eagle, so twice the sum logically became the Double Eagle. The design with the head of Liberty remained in use until 1907, after which a new design followed. For collectors of American coins, the Double Eagle is a classic; for investors, it is a proven way to own gold in historical form.

Liberty on the obverse, heraldic eagle on the reverse

The obverse shows Liberty in profile. The word LIBERTY appears on her diadem, and stars form a circle around her. The reverse belongs to the eagle with outspread wings, the shield on its breast and the olive branch and arrows in its talons. Above the eagle, the product photo shows the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, which was added from 1866 onwards. Also legible on the photo are the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS. The way the face value is written was also adjusted over the years, so such details differ from year to year.

Just under an ounce of gold, in bank quality

With 30.09 g of fine gold, the Double Eagle is only slightly below one fine troy ounce. This makes it a weighty building block if you want to secure your wealth in tangible assets. As an inflation hedge, gold convinces through its limited supply; as crisis protection, through its recognition around the globe. Well-known coins like this one also find a buyer easily when needed.

For this coin, the condition “bank quality” stands for genuine circulated pieces of the kind customary in the gold trade of banks, with scratches and worn areas. The product photo also shows such signs of wear. Which year of minting your coin bears is not fixed.

Tax treatment

You buy the Double Eagle VAT-free as investment gold. For private investors resident in Germany, a gain from the sale remains tax-free after a holding period of one year.
