The Piedra del Sol

Carved from olivine basalt.

According to the Museo Nacional de Antropología, the stone measures 3.6 metres in diameter and weighs 24.5 tonnes. According to the INAH, it depicts the myth of the five suns, with the sign Nahui Ollin and the face of the sun god Tonatiuh at its centre. A date is carved into it as well, 13 Reed. The INAH reads it as the year 1479 and estimates that the stone was completed then, under Axayácatl.

1790 to today

From the Plaza Mayor to the museum.

Found during paving work, then at the cathedral, in the museum since 1964: the stages of the stone’s journey.

  1. 1790Found at the Plaza MayorOn 17 December, workers came across the stone on the south side of the Plaza Mayor in Mexico City while digging up the ground for paving. It lay with the relief facing down, and not in its original place: according to the museum, it comes from the sacred precinct of Tenochtitlan.
  2. 1791At the west tower of the cathedralMonths after the find, the stone was set upright against the west tower of the cathedral, with the relief facing west. It stayed there until 1885.
  3. 1792The first studyAntonio de León y Gama published the first study of the stone and considered it a “calendario azteca”, an Aztec calendar. It is still popularly known by that name today.
  4. 1885To the National MuseumSoldiers detached the stone from the tower. According to the museum, five workers and 20 soldiers took it to today’s Calle Moneda in 15 days, using a platform, beams and pulleys. The National Museum was housed there in the old colonial palace where precious metals were once melted down and minted.
  5. 1964To the Museo Nacional de AntropologíaAccording to the museum, the stone travelled to Chapultepec on a platform with 16 wheels, to the Museo Nacional de Antropología. There it stands in the place of honour in the Mexica Hall.

1/200 oz Gold Aztec Calendar 2026 – minted fine gold under the sign of the fifth sun

  • Genuine investment gold: physical fine gold whose value tracks the gold price – building wealth in small, plannable steps.
  • Strictly limited: a worldwide mintage of only 1,000 pieces – considerably scarcer than most issues in this miniature format.
  • Growth potential: the sharp limitation meets lively demand – lending this coin a high appreciation potential.
  • Rarity: a sought-after collector's coin with one of the lowest mintages in the 1/200-ounce segment.
  • Minting quality: the highest possible quality level Proof (PP) – mirror-bright fields, precisely matted relief.
  • Design: the world-famous Aztec calendar – sun god Tonatiuh in a halo of rays, surrounded by day signs, glyphs and ornamental rings.
  • Material / fineness: 0.16 g fine gold at 999.9/1,000 – highest purity, 14.00 mm diameter, reeded edge.
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle.
  • Country of origin: minted in Germany, issued for Liberia with a face value of 25 Dollars.

Barely bigger than a fingertip – yet genuine precious metal with substance. This gold coin combines a design of enormous cultural weight with the lasting value of physical gold. What matters here is not the image, but the metal beneath it: 999.9/1,000 fine gold, whose value develops in line with the gold price. Within the highly sought-after gold coins in miniature format, this coin appears in the "Wonders of the World" series.

What sets this issue apart is a number: a mintage of only 1,000 pieces worldwide. This makes it strictly limited – many comparable 1/200-ounce coins are issued in five times that quantity. Scarcity is the currency of this market. Where supply remains this tight and demand persists, a noticeable appreciation potential emerges. A genuine rarity, then, which experience shows tends to sell out quickly.

The design: the Aztec calendar in fine gold

One side shows the face of the sun god Tonatiuh within a wreath of pointed rays, flanked by a crescent moon, stars and delicate spiral ornaments; the inscriptions read "25 DOLLARS", "REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA" and "1/200 OZ 9999 FINE GOLD". The other side depicts the complete calendar stone: concentric rings with day signs and pictorial symbols encircle the central face, beneath which a cartouche bears the year of issue, 2026. That such a wealth of detail can be rendered on just 14 millimetres is true minting artistry – and in Proof condition, the contrast between gleaming fields and matte relief shines through especially beautifully.

The Sun Stone – a monument of basalt

The original, in Spanish Piedra del Sol, is a monolithic basalt disc roughly 3.6 metres in diameter and weighing about 24 tonnes. On 17 December 1790 it resurfaced during levelling works in the heart of Mexico City; today it holds the central position in the Aztec Hall of the National Museum of Anthropology. At its centre rests Tonatiuh, surrounded by the four past ages of the world. The ring bearing the 20 day signs refers to the 260-day ritual calendar, which was interlocked with the 365-day solar year – a historical testament to precise astronomical observation that continues to fascinate to this day.

Why gold in miniature format convinces

Gold is humanity's oldest currency and has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never had a value of zero, it possesses intrinsic value, and it is recognised around the globe as a means of payment and exchange. For investors, it is precisely the small format that appeals: the entry amount remains low, and anyone who regularly acquires small quantities over the years accumulates them into considerable wealth. Large bullion coins bundle a lot of capital into a single piece – a 1/200 ounce coin, by contrast, can be purchased flexibly, stored discreetly and converted back into cash at any time. As a proven inflation hedge and reliable form of crisis protection, physical gold preserves your purchasing power while fiat money remains freely expandable – not without reason are central banks among the largest holders of gold in the world. Profits from the sale are also generally tax-free, provided the minimum holding period of one year is observed.

Gold has been shining for thousands of years – and it will never lose its shine.

Not a souvenir and not a mere trinket, but recognised investment gold in a handy form: securely packaged in a coincard, cleanly documented and therefore easy to store. Even for occasions such as birthdays, christenings, weddings or Christmas, giving this coin is no small gesture, but a genuine gold investment whose value is tied to the gold price. And because the very low mintage of 1,000 pieces further elevates this collector's coin, two arguments come together here that rarely coincide: substance and rarity.
