With a numbered certificate of authenticity, the coin is presented in a black display case with a geometric design on its magnetic lid. The case comes in an illustrated shipper featuring a goat. Line up the shippers of the whole series, and they show all twelve animals of the Great Race.
The design
Designed by Natasha Muhl.
Natasha Muhl’s lunar work began with the goat in 2015, when she designed both the gold and the silver Year of the Goat coins. Telling the tale of the goat again in 2027 has been a pleasure, she says.

In the Chinese calendar
The Year of the Goat.
According to Chinese tradition, the emperor had all the animals race for the twelve places in the calendar. Behind the horse, which came seventh, the goat travelled with the monkey and the rooster. Together the three crossed a wide river; the goat led the way and came eighth. Those born in its year are believed to be calm, compassionate and creative.

The mint
A P from Perth.
The Perth Mint has been striking coins in Western Australia since 1899, at first as a branch of the Royal Mint. Its sovereigns bore a small P beneath St George and the Dragon. The mark returned in 1986, and today it appears on all of The Perth Mint’s own coins. Since 1970, the mint has belonged to the State of Western Australia.

Every twelve years the goat returns to the Chinese zodiac – and the Perth Mint seizes this moment for one of its most beautiful issues. This 1/2 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 in Proof quality is strictly limited, individually encapsulated in a high-quality capsule, and is aimed at everyone who wants to not only weigh precious metal but also admire it.
The design: "Three Goats Bring Bliss"
The obverse design was created by Perth Mint designer Natasha Muhl, whose initials "NM" appear at the lower edge of the coin. It depicts three generations: a fully grown goat standing on an elevated rock, a kid beside it, and a resting billy goat in the foreground. The scene draws on the ancient Chinese saying of good fortune, "Three Goats Bring Bliss" – a symbol for the end of winter, the beginning of spring, and renewal. To the right, a plum branch blossoms, symbolizing purity, resilience, and hope. Also featured are the Chinese character for goat, the inscription "GOAT 2027", and the traditional mint mark "P" of the minting facility. A charming detail: Natasha Muhl already designed the goat for Lunar Series II back in 2015 – twelve years later, she tells the same story with a fresh hand.
The reverse bears the portrait of King Charles III, created by Dan Thorne, surrounded by the inscription "CHARLES III AUSTRALIA" as well as the details "1/2 oz 9999 Ag" and "50 CENTS". This makes this silver coin official legal tender of the Australian state.
Proof – noticeably more effort per coin
For the Proof quality level, blanks and minting dies are elaborately polished, and each piece is struck multiple times at reduced speed. The result: a deep black, mirror-like background from which the matte, finely chiseled relief stands out in vivid relief. Fur, rock edges, and blossoms appear almost three-dimensional as a result. Such a piece should only be handled by the edge or with gloves, as fingerprints are mercilessly visible on the mirrored surface. For comparison, it's worth looking at the bullion version of the same goat in Brilliant Uncirculated quality: more robust to handle, but without this depth effect and without a limited mintage.
Mintage of 4,000 pieces – the collector's calculation
The Perth Mint limits this edition of the Australian Lunar Series III to 4,000 pieces worldwide. For comparison: more pieces exist of the 1-ounce sister coin in Proof quality, and the bullion editions of the series are issued without a fixed limit. Small mintages have traditionally been the driving force behind demand in numismatics, especially since Lunar silver coins are collected in Asia just as much as in Europe. A charming extra of the series: when the outer packaging of several years' issues are placed side by side, they gradually form a complete picture of all twelve animals of the great race.
