The design
Designed by Natasha Muhl.
Natasha Muhl’s lunar work began with the goat in 2015, when she designed both the gold and the silver Year of the Goat coins. Telling the tale of the goat again in 2027 has been a pleasure, she says.

In the Chinese calendar
The Year of the Goat.
According to Chinese tradition, the emperor had all the animals race for the twelve places in the calendar. Behind the horse, which came seventh, the goat travelled with the monkey and the rooster. Together the three crossed a wide river; the goat led the way and came eighth. Those born in its year are believed to be calm, compassionate and creative.

The mint
A P from Perth.
The Perth Mint has been striking coins in Western Australia since 1899, at first as a branch of the Royal Mint. Its sovereigns bore a small P beneath St George and the Dragon. The mark returned in 1986, and today it appears on all of The Perth Mint’s own coins. Since 1970, the mint has belonged to the State of Western Australia.

The Perth Mint’s first Lunar Series began with the 1996 coins, the first of its kind in Australia. The third series started with the Mouse coins of 2020, and the goat is its eighth animal. The design also holds a tiny micro-engraved letter, visible only under a magnifying glass. It is meant to make the coin significantly harder to counterfeit.

"Three goats bring good fortune" – the obverse design in detail
The obverse shows three animals: an adult goat on a rocky outcrop, a resting billy goat by the water, and a curious kid. This composition draws on the Chinese saying of good fortune “Three goats bring good fortune,” which symbolises the end of winter, the start of spring and a successful new beginning. To the right, a plum blossom tree winds upward, a symbol of purity, resilience and hope. Also featured are the Chinese character for goat, the inscription “GOAT 2027” and the mint's “P” mark. In addition, the Perth Mint has incorporated a microscopically small security feature into the design, visible only under a magnifying glass, which makes counterfeiting considerably more difficult.
The reverse featuring King Charles III
The reverse is dominated by the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne. Surrounding it are the monarch's name, the issuing country Australia, the weight and fineness (“1 oz 9999 Ag”), as well as the face value of one Australian dollar. The coin is thus legal tender – a point that provides clarity for internationally traded bullion coins.

Since 1996, the Perth Mint, founded in 1899, has told the story of the Chinese calendar through its Lunar issues. Following Lunar I and Lunar II, the programme's third series is currently underway, with each zodiac sign receiving a completely newly designed motif: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
