The cycle
Gold is practically indestructible.
Around 222,600 tonnes of gold had been mined by mid-2026, the World Gold Council estimates.
Put together, it would make a cube with sides of around 22.6 metres.
The refinery

Umicore describes the task of its refinery like this: giving precious metals a new life and putting them back into the cycle.
Electronic scrap and spent catalysts arrive here, as well as by-products of the non-ferrous metals industry and by-products from mining.
The way back
How this becomes pure gold
- The sampleEvery material gets its own sampling procedure. The sample and its analysis decide what is credited to the supplier.
- The molten bathOxygen-rich air and fuel flow into the molten bath through a submerged lance. Copper, lead and nickel act as collectors, taking up the precious metals.
- The separationThen the copper is leached out, and the precious metals remain in a residue. The refinery purifies it further, by classic cupellation and by processes of its own.
- Fine goldAt the end there is gold as granules of 99.99 per cent and in large trading bars of 12.5 kilograms.
Umicore writes that the value chain behind its bars includes metals from recycling activities alongside other sources.
The refinery in Hoboken is on the LBMA’s Good Delivery List for gold and silver.

2.5g Gold Bar Umicore Gift Bar: fine gold to give as a gift that keeps its value
- Investment goal: With gold bars, you effectively protect your savings against the creeping devaluation caused by inflation, and a small bar makes this step particularly easy.
- Preserving value: Fine gold stores value across generations and preserves the real substance of wealth, no matter how paper money develops.
- Protection: When inflation, recession and high national debt come together, gold gives your wealth a firm footing.
- Crisis protection: At just 2.5 g, the bar is small enough to serve as a means of payment in a crisis or to be exchanged for everyday necessities.
- Gift-ready: set in a festively designed blister card, ready to hand over
Some gifts are forgotten after a few days; this one stays with the recipient for years. The 2.5g gold bar Umicore Gift Bar combines festive packaging with genuine fine gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000. This way, you give joy for the moment and at the same time a small inflation hedge that lasts a long time.
A gift that withstands currency devaluation
Paper money loses purchasing power year after year through inflation, even if you hardly notice it. Gold, by contrast, cannot be multiplied at will and has preserved its value over long periods of time. Anyone who gives such a bar to children or grandchildren for Christmas, a birthday or confirmation lays the foundation for a small reserve of their own, which can be expanded with every further bar.
Bar and blister card in detail
The rectangular bar has a shiny golden surface. The circular Umicore logo with its spiral pattern, the lettering umicore and the weight and fineness are clearly struck on it. A transparent plastic sleeve encloses the bar and protects it from damage.
The card itself is designed as a gift: a dark blue, glittering background is reminiscent of a starry sky, and a golden ribbon runs from the top left corner down to the bottom right, where it forms a bow. At the top right, the Umicore logo appears once more on a blue background. This means the bar is ready to give as a gift as soon as you buy it.
Umicore: a group headquartered in Belgium
The bar is made by Umicore, an internationally active materials and recycling group headquartered in Belgium, whose fields of activity include the processing of precious metals. As a minted bar, it shows clearly defined lettering and an evenly shining surface. The bar is new and is suitable as a gift as well as the first building block of your own gold reserve.
Purchasing power that does not depend on central banks
Central banks can create paper money in almost any quantity. Gold, on the other hand, is a scarce commodity with limited supply. For more than 6,000 years it has served people as a store of value, and in this long history it has never been worthless. It is no coincidence that central banks themselves are among the largest gold holders in the world.
At the same time, a small bar is a well-thought-out form of crisis protection: its value remains manageable, it takes up hardly any space and can be used individually when needed. As investment gold, it is also VAT-free.
