In the Chinese calendar

The Year of the Goat.

According to Chinese tradition, the emperor had all the animals race for the twelve places in the calendar. Behind the horse, which came seventh, the goat travelled with the monkey and the rooster. Together the three crossed a wide river; the goat led the way and came eighth. Those born in its year are believed to be calm, compassionate and creative.

The mint

A P from Perth.

The Perth Mint has been striking coins in Western Australia since 1899, at first as a branch of the Royal Mint. Its sovereigns bore a small P beneath St George and the Dragon. The mark returned in 1986, and today it appears on all of The Perth Mint’s own coins. Since 1970, the mint has belonged to the State of Western Australia.

  • The character for goat
  • The inscription GOAT 2027
  • The P of The Perth Mint

The Perth Mint’s first Lunar Series began with the 1996 coins, the first of its kind in Australia. The third series started with the Mouse coins of 2020, and the goat is its eighth animal.

With the Gold Lunar III Goat 2027, the third edition of the Australian lunar calendar series reaches its eighth chapter. In Chinese zodiac tradition, the Year of the Goat represents gentleness, creativity and quiet perseverance. These are exactly the qualities that Perth Mint designer Wade Robinson has captured: his animal stands alone, upright and unfazed in rugged terrain. An image that appeals to collectors – and one that fits the precious metal itself, since gold too has held its own in every environment for millennia.

The design: endurance, captured in fine gold

The obverse shows the goat on a high plateau, with jagged rocks and a solitary pine tree growing in the background. The Chinese character for goat, the inscription "GOAT 2027" and the time-honoured "P" mint mark complete the composition. The reverse bears the portrait of King Charles III created by Dan Thorne, surrounded by "CHARLES III AUSTRALIA" as well as the details "1/4oz 9999 Au" and "25 DOLLARS". This makes the coin not only a work of art but also official legal tender of Australia.

Proof – the premier class of coin production

For Proof quality, polished dies and individually inspected blanks are used, with each coin struck multiple times. The result: a deep, mirror-like black background against which the relief stands out with a velvety texture. Collectors know how sensitive this surface is – for this reason, never touch the piece with bare fingers. The coin is delivered protected in a capsule, placed in a red presentation case with gold engraving and accompanied by the certificate. The illustrated outer box depicts a scene from the "Great Race"; lined up alongside the cases of the other years of issue, a continuous panorama of all twelve zodiac signs emerges.

Lunar Series III: a collecting theme with substance

The Perth Mint has been minting Lunar coins since 1996. Following Lunar I and Lunar II, the third series has been running since 2019 – Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse and now the Goat. The series is issued in several denominations, also accompanied by silver coins, making it easier to build a complete collection. Anyone comparing Lunar gold coins with classic investment products will quickly recognise the difference: standard bars and bullion coins follow almost exclusively the metal value, while limited editions are additionally sought after numismatically. Investors who prefer pure weight opt for gold bars; those who appreciate changing designs, birth-year relevance and small mintages will find this edition just right. Incidentally, Goat years include 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 and 2027 – a lovely gift for the matching birth year.

Why gold – and why a quarter ounce?

Gold is humanity's oldest currency, over 6,000 years old, and has outlived every paper currency. It possesses intrinsic value, has never been worthless, and is recognised worldwide as a medium of exchange. Supply is scarce, and even central banks hoard it as a reserve – a telling vote of no confidence in their own fiat money.

  • Purchasing power protection: a proven store of value when currencies lose trust
  • Tax-attractive: physical investment gold is exempt from VAT; profits are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
  • Convenient: a 1/4 ounce is easier to sell than a larger unit – ideal for building a finely divided holding
  • Generational value: indestructible, storable, transferable – wealth for children and grandchildren
A small coin with a big impact: 999.9 fine gold, Proof quality, 3,500 pieces worldwide – and a design that stands for resilience.

Whether as an entry point into the series, an addition to an existing collection, or a lasting tangible asset in the safe: this 1/4 ounce gold coin combines numismatic appeal with the solid foundation of genuine precious metal. You will also find further gold coins from around the world at Kettner Edelmetalle – securely packaged and delivered via insured value shipping.
