Krugerrand 1 ounce gold 2024 with Privy Mark, springbok side with the sign

Beside the springbok, this Krugerrand bears a Privy Mark: a small additional sign added during striking. It shows a head between the numerals 18 and 74: in 1874 the Burgers Pond was made, the first gold coin of the South African Republic.

On the springbok side, below the word KRUGERRAND and to the left of the springbok’s head, there is a small sign.

It shows a bearded head in profile. To its left stand the numerals 18, to its right the numerals 74.

To the left and right of the springbok, split into two halves, stands the year the coin was struck: 2024.

The sign of this coin

The Burgers Pond of 1874

The Burgers Pond of 1874 was the first gold coin of the South African Republic. President Thomas François Burgers had coins the size of the English sovereign struck in England.

The gold came from the Transvaal: Burgers sent 300 ounces to the Heaton mint in Birmingham. The dies were cut by Leonard Wyon, engraver at the Royal Mint, from a portrait and a sketch of the coat of arms supplied by Burgers.

The coin showed the president’s head on one side and, on the other, the coat of arms of the republic with the motto:

Eendragt Maakt Magt

Unity makes strength.

Around 800 pieces were made. The Burgers Pond never entered official circulation: it was sold as a keepsake, and many pieces were pierced and worn as jewellery.

The term

What a Privy Mark is

A Privy Mark usually recalls a special occasion or an anniversary.

The name comes from the Old French privé. In the past, such marks served to tell apart coins from different periods or from different mint masters, and also as a safeguard against counterfeiting. Today mints place them mainly on commemorative and collector issues.

In 2017, for the 50th anniversary, all collector issues of the Krugerrand bore a Privy Mark with a large 50. In 2024 the South African Mint released an issue whose mark shows the coining press “Oom Paul” and the year 1892, when the first coins were struck on it.

The same coin

A Krugerrand in every respect

The sign is added, the coin stays the same. For the 2024 gold ounce bearing the mark of the coining press “Oom Paul”, the South African Mint states the same values as for the regular ounce: 33.930 grams, 32.69 millimetres and an alloy of 916.67 thousandths gold and 83.33 thousandths copper.

Like every gold Krugerrand, the coin is legal tender in South Africa, without a face value struck on it.

It is struck in proof: the field shines like a mirror, design and lettering stand matt on it. The mintage, that is the number of pieces struck, is 100. It comes in a case with a certificate of authenticity.

The new special edition of the Krugerrand with the Privy Mark of the Burgers Pond is an extraordinary tribute to the origins of South African gold coins and unites two icons of numismatic history. This world premiere combines the globally celebrated Krugerrand with a striking detail: the Privy Mark of the Burgers Pond – the "original form" of the Krugerrand. You will find this unique edition exclusively at Kettner Edelmetalle!

The Burgers Pond – the original form of the world-famous Krugerrand

The Burgers Pond from the former Transvaal Republic marks the first attempt to cast South African gold into its own currency, thereby laying the foundation for what would later become known worldwide as the Krugerrand. The coin, minted in 1874, is closely linked to the history and identity of South Africa, as it was the first coin produced from the country's rich gold deposits. This makes the Burgers Pond a direct predecessor to the Krugerrand, which was introduced in 1967 as a symbol of South Africa's gold market.

Historical Context

The obverse of the Burgers Pond bears the portrait of Thomas François Burgers, the fourth President of the Transvaal Republic, while the reverse shows the national coat of arms. President Burgers had the visionary plan to create a national coin from the gold of his homeland – a bold step that laid the foundation for the later success story of the Krugerrand. However, while the Burgers Pond went down in history as the first South African gold coin, its journey was anything but easy.

In 1873, Burgers, without consulting his own parliament, sent 300 ounces of gold to London to have coins minted in the style of the English pound. The firm Ralph Heaton and Sons in Birmingham ultimately minted 837 coins. However, when Burgers presented these to the Volksraad, the parliament of the Transvaal Republic, the coin was indignantly rejected. It never entered official circulation and its commercial concept failed. Instead, most Burgers Ponds were used as jewelry or keepsakes – many of which were lost or destroyed over time.

Although the Burgers Pond failed in its economic role, it later became a numismatic treasure. With the discovery of the coin's numismatic value in the late 19th century, a passion began for the few remaining specimens that continues to this day. Particularly interesting is the fact that there are two variants of the coin – one with a fine beard and one with a coarse beard in the portrait of Burgers.

From Burgers Pond to Krugerrand

While the Burgers Pond itself never entered circulation, it marked the beginning of a significant tradition of South African gold coins. Its creation paved the way for the Krugerrand, which, almost 100 years later and in a completely different era, would become a worldwide symbol of the South African gold market. Thus, the Burgers Pond is not only a rare collector's item but also a historical testament reflecting the origin of the Krugerrand – the first vision of a coin made from the gold of the land that was once Transvaal.

A Connection Between Two Numismatic Legends

On the occasion of this commemoration, this special edition is strictly limited and impressively combines tradition and modernity. The obverse shows, as usual, the portrait of Paul Kruger, while the distinctive Privy Mark of the Burgers Pond is subtly integrated. In this way, this coin not only honors the history of South Africa but also the transition from the first South African gold coin to the legendary Krugerrand series – a connection between two numismatic legends!

Kettner Edelmetalle offers these coins exclusively worldwide. Take the opportunity to acquire such a rare collector's coin and benefit from the high value appreciation potential of this rarity. A true masterpiece of coin history that should not be missing from any collection!

The Krugerrand is not only a symbol of South Africa's rich gold deposits but also a first-class investment for collectors and investors. With a limitation of only 100 pieces worldwide, this Krugerrand is a rarity of inestimable value.
