Kaiser Wilhelm II · Struck in 2026

A few millimetres of historyA sign for the year 1896

Set of 3 gold Krugerrands 2026 with Privy Mark, case with 3 coins

Beside the springbok, every coin in this set bears a Privy Mark: a small additional sign added during striking. It shows a head between the numerals 18 and 96: on 3 January 1896, Kaiser Wilhelm II had a telegram sent to Paul Kruger.

Under the loupe

A small sign beside the springbok

On the springbok side, below the word KRUGERRAND and to the left of the springbok’s head, there is a small sign.

It shows a head in profile, with an upturned moustache. To its left stand the numerals 18, to its right the numerals 96.

To the left and right of the springbok, split into two halves, stands the year the coin was struck: 2026.

The sign of this set

A telegram of 3 January 1896

On 3 January 1896, Kaiser Wilhelm II had a telegram sent from Berlin to Paul Kruger, the President of the South African Republic.

Wilhelm II was born in Berlin in 1859 and died in 1941. He was King of Prussia and German Emperor.

The term

What a Privy Mark is

A Privy Mark usually recalls a special occasion or an anniversary.

The name comes from the Old French privé. In the past, such marks served to tell apart coins from different periods or from different mint masters, and also as a safeguard against counterfeiting. Today mints place them mainly on commemorative and collector issues.

The name comes from the Old French privé. Today mints place them mainly on commemorative and collector issues.

In 2017, for the 50th anniversary, all collector issues of the Krugerrand bore a Privy Mark with a large 50. In 2024 the South African Mint released an issue whose mark shows the coining press “Oom Paul” and the year 1892, when the first coins were struck on it.

The same coin

A Krugerrand in every respect

The sign is added, the coins stay the same.

Like every gold Krugerrand, the coins are legal tender in South Africa, without a face value struck on them.

The coins are struck in proof: the field shines like a mirror, design and lettering stand matt on it. The mintage, that is the number of sets struck, is 250. The set comes in a case with a certificate of authenticity.

What stays

The springbok side and the portrait side stay as they are. What changes is the small sign below the word KRUGERRAND.

Each sign stands for a different occasion, on a few millimetres of gold.

The springbok stays, the sign tells the story.

The fascination of the Krugerrand – more than just gold

Since its first issue in 1967, the Krugerrand has become the most widely traded gold coin in the world. The characteristic design featuring Paul Kruger, former president of the South African Republic (1883–1902), and the elegant springbok is instantly recognisable worldwide. The reddish-gold colouring, created by the copper content, makes every coin unmistakable while also making it more durable.

Gold is humanity's oldest currency – it has outlived all paper currencies and will continue to do so in the future. While central banks around the world are increasing their gold reserves, you too can benefit from the stability and intrinsic value of this precious metal. Gold has shone for thousands of years and will never lose its lustre.
