The design

An autumn in the engraver’s garden

When Stan Witten moved to Ottawa, he fell in love with the maples and planted a few in his garden. Those trees, the Royal Canadian Mint quotes him as saying, inspired the design.

“In the fall of 2023, as the leaves were coming down, I gathered some and placed them on the ground to form the arrangement seen here,” says Witten. According to the Mint, they are sugar maple leaves, arguably the most famous maple in Canada.

The leaves overlap gently and tilt to the right, as though they were falling or had just landed. That is how the Mint describes them.

The finish

Matte Proof with black rhodium

According to the Royal Canadian Mint, Matte Proof is a finish unique to the Mint: like Proof, only with a satin field instead of a high shine. On the Triple Maple, black rhodium was added in 2026, as part of the coin the Mint issues. It fills the field on both sides, and the leaves stand out against it in relief.

The case

In the Mint’s case

The coin stands in a black lacquered wood case with the emblem of the Royal Canadian Mint in gold in the lid. According to the Mint, it comes with a black beauty box and a serialized certificate.

Pure Maple Leaf 2026 – Canada's Maple Leaf in the Finest Special Edition

With the 2026 issue, the Royal Canadian Mint elevates its world-famous classic to a new level: a familiar design, artfully refined and strictly limited. The key facts at a glance:

  • Design: Three intricately engraved sugar maple leaves, glowing warm gold against a deeply blackened, mirror-finished background – a dramatic light-dark contrast, signed by engraver Stan Witten ("SW").
  • Material & Fineness: A full troy ounce of gold with a fineness of 999.9/1000 – purest 24-karat fine gold.
  • Manufacturer: Royal Canadian Mint, one of the most renowned mints in the world.
  • Investment purpose: inflation hedge, long-term wealth preservation, and crisis protection.
  • Tax: Exempt from VAT as investment gold under § 25c UStG – and profits are tax-free after a one-year holding period.
  • Country of origin: Canada.

A Classic, Completely Reimagined

Hardly any bullion coin enjoys as much trust worldwide as Canada's classic maple leaf design. Anyone familiar with the classic Gold Maple Leaf as a plain bullion coin will experience an entirely different facet here: an elaborately refined collector's edition in Proof quality. Instead of the usual matte-shiny bullion surface, a deep black shimmering mirror background meets gilded maple leaves. The result is a showpiece that makes an immediate impression in hand – presenting Canada's familiar ambassador in an entirely new guise.

The reverse presents not a single leaf, but three artfully staggered sugar maple leaves. The foremost leaf stands out in relief, while those behind create depth and movement. The design is framed by the inscriptions "CANADA", "9999", and "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR". The obverse features the portrait of King Charles III (engraving "SR", Steven Rosati), flanked by "CHARLES III", the year of issue "2026", the addition "D · G · REX", and the face value "200 DOLLARS". The reeded edge rounds off the high-quality overall impression.

Particularly appealing for collectors is the strict limitation: the mintage is limited to just 550 pieces worldwide. The coin is delivered protected in a coin capsule. While the regular Maple Leaf is available in various years in practically unlimited quantities and scores primarily on its pure gold value, this special edition combines the material value of a full troy ounce with genuine numismatic rarity – a distinction that can shape its collector's value over the years.

Why Gold Is a Proven Store of Value

Gold is the world's oldest currency and has been a reliable store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never been worth zero, as it possesses an inherent, intrinsic value that is recognized worldwide. While central banks can expand fiat money almost without limit, the supply of gold is naturally scarce – a key reason for its long-term value stability. It is no coincidence that central banks themselves are among the largest gold holders in the world.

Gold has shone for millennia – and it will not lose its shine in the future either. It protects against loss of purchasing power and can be traded worldwide at any time.

For investors and collectors alike, this coin is doubly interesting: it combines physical precious metal as protection against inflation and currency risks with the fascination of a limited edition. Added to this is the tax advantage – investment gold is exempt from VAT in Germany, and after a minimum holding period of one year, capital gains are tax-free. This troy ounce can thus be understood both as a building block for long-term retirement provision and as a store of value that can be passed down from generation to generation.
