The original
The first pfennig. From the Bank deutscher Länder.
As the first newly minted coin of the Deutsche Mark, the pfennig was put into circulation by the Bank deutscher Länder in early 1949. The design is by Adolf Jäger of Frankfurt am Main: 16.5 millimetres, 2 grams, a steel core clad with copper on both sides, struck with the dates 1948 and 1949. From 1950 the pfennig bore the legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, and it remained legal tender until the end of 2001. The Pfennig 2026 takes up the design of the first issues once more. It is not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank.

Hardly any coin has left such a deep imprint on collective memory as the Pfennig. It jingled in piggy banks, lay on the counter at the kiosk, and gave entire generations their proverbs. With the 5 oz Copper Pfennig 2026, it returns as an exclusive collector's coin made of solid fine copper, almost four times the diameter of the original. So not one ounce, but five at once.
A design from the birth of the D-Mark
The model dates back to 1948 and 1949. At that time, the Bank deutscher Länder issued the first Pfennigs of the young D-Mark, designed by the artist Adolf Jäger. The original was a small piece of copper-plated steel, 16.5 mm in diameter and weighing just 2 grams. From the 1950 year of issue onward, the Pfennig bore the inscription "Bundesrepublik Deutschland". It remained legal tender until the end of 2001. The 2026 edition deliberately takes up the imagery of the very first years of issue, with the historic inscription of the central bank.
On the value side is the large, embossed figure "1" between two ears of grain. To the left and right of it, the year is split into "20" and "26", with PFENNIG arched beneath. A fine beaded circle frames the coin's field. The reverse shows the oak branch with five finely veined, wavy leaves above a horizontal stem, with the inscription "BANK DEUTSCHER LÄNDER" above it.
The details reward a second look. On the lower right leaf, the small inscription "REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA" can be found, and at the base of the branch sits the Liberian coat of arms with a sailing ship, palm tree, rising sun, and the motto "THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE". In the lower arc runs the inscription "5 OZ CU 999 FEINKUPFER 1 DOLLAR". A German cult design on a Liberian blank: this very combination is what makes this issue so appealing.
Proof: mirror shine meets copper glow
For the Proof quality, high-gloss polished blanks are struck multiple times with specially treated dies. This creates a mirrored field from which the frosted relief stands out almost three-dimensionally. On the warm, reddish-shimmering copper, this contrast appears especially striking, particularly on the veins of the oak leaves and the edges of the large "1". A care tip: it's best not to touch the mirrored surfaces at all, as fingerprints remain permanently visible on copper.

Small in the original, grand in the display case
Why is this particular version especially worthwhile? Quite simply: with a mintage of only 2,500 pieces, it quickly becomes clear that not every Pfennig fan will get their hands on one. The Pfennig series 2026 is available in several formats. The 1 oz Proof edition measures 40 mm and is limited to 5,000 pieces. The 5 oz variant in Antique Finish is even scarcer at 1,000 pieces, but features an aged surface instead of mirror shine. Anyone who values both brilliant shine and a large surface should choose the coin presented here. A gold or silver coin with the same design would of course tie up considerably more capital. The copper edition, however, impresses with its presence and a very low mintage.
It is precisely this limitation, the cult design, and the large 65 mm format that make this piece a genuine collector's coin that stands out in any D-Mark or themed collection. Issues of this kind are strictly limited and will not be restruck. This results in interesting value appreciation potential – though this is, of course, no guarantee of any particular price performance.
Why copper excites collectors
Copper coins offer a huge variety of designs, from mythology and wildlife to monetary history, as seen here. In the USA, numerous copper rounds, i.e. copper medallions, are struck with a wide range of designs. For beginners, copper coins and copper bars are ideal for getting a feel for the weight and look of coins and bars. Most buyers of copper are classic collectors. They enjoy building up their own collection piece by piece.
He who does not honor the Pfennig is not worthy of the Thaler. With five ounces of fine copper in Proof quality, honoring it becomes easy.
Whether for D-Mark nostalgics, theme collectors, or as a gift guaranteed to spark conversation: with the 5 oz Copper Pfennig 2026, you secure a rarity of which only 2,500 pieces exist worldwide. Shipping is carried out as insured value shipping.
