The original
The first pfennig. From the Bank deutscher Länder.
As the first newly minted coin of the Deutsche Mark, the pfennig was put into circulation by the Bank deutscher Länder in early 1949. The design is by Adolf Jäger of Frankfurt am Main: 16.5 millimetres, 2 grams, a steel core clad with copper on both sides, struck with the dates 1948 and 1949. From 1950 the pfennig bore the legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, and it remained legal tender until the end of 2001. The Pfennig 2026 takes up the design of the first issues once more. It is not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank.

Hardly any coin is as familiar to Germans as the small Pfennig. For decades it jingled in every wallet, was given away as a good-luck charm, and was collected in piggy banks. This collector's coin brings the classic back, but in a size no one has ever held before: 5 ounces of pure copper, 65 millimeters in diameter, minted in 2026, with a mintage of only 1,000 pieces.
From Small Change to Art Object
The historical model originated after the currency reform of 1948. The first Pfennig coins of the 1948 and 1949 vintages bore the inscription "BANK DEUTSCHER LÄNDER", designed by the artist Adolf Jäger. Such an original weighed just 2 grams, measured 16.5 millimeters, and was made of copper-plated steel. The new edition, by contrast, tips the scales at 155.52 grams of fine copper with a fineness of 999/1,000. That is around 78 times the weight, and the coin is made entirely of the red metal.
It is precisely this contrast that creates the appeal. An everyday object once barely noticed becomes an impressive showpiece.
The Obverse: Face Value, Ears of Grain, and Year of Issue
At the center stands the mighty, highly relieved face value "1" with its typical wedge-shaped base and wide foot bar. It is framed on the left and right by two stylized ears of grain with finely veined leaves, whose long awns continue upward in elegant curves. The year is split, with "20" on the left and "26" on the right. Below, in classic Antiqua lettering, runs the inscription "PFENNIG". A fine beaded border frames the coin's field and rounds off the design.
The Reverse: The Little Oak Twig of the Bank deutscher Länder
On the reverse, the well-known little oak twig with five leaves grows from a horizontal ground line. For many, this design is a symbol of new beginnings and reconstruction. Around the edge, large letters read "BANK DEUTSCHER LÄNDER". Below the ground line sits the coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia, and in the lower arc are the details "5 OZ CU 999 FEINKUPFER 1 DOLLAR". The edge is reeded, as is typical of high-quality large coins.
Antique Finish: Patina That Tells a Story
The antique finish gives the copper coin an aged character. Warm reddish-brown tones alternate with darker oxidation spots, and a fine, brushed texture runs across the surface. The raised areas, above all the "1" and the leaves, shimmer with a silky glow. This creates a depth effect that polished mirror finishes cannot achieve. The Pfennig looks as though it has endured for decades.
A piece of German coin history, reimagined: large, heavy, patinated, and with only 1,000 pieces a true rarity.

Why Copper Fascinates Collectors
Copper coins offer a huge variety of designs. Especially in the USA, countless copper rounds are minted – copper medallions on the most diverse themes, from mythology to contemporary history. They are ideal for beginners: you get a feel for the tactile quality, minting craftsmanship, and look of large coins without having to dive deeply into the subject right away. Most buyers are, in any case, classic collectors who enjoy building their own collection.
This coin has a particular advantage here. With 5 ounces of copper, you hold a substantial amount of metal in your hand, and the 65 mm size allows every detail of the relief to stand out. Those holding the piece for the first time are usually surprised by how heavy it is.
Comparison: Pfennig, Liberia Copper, and Silver
- Compared to other 5 oz copper coins from Liberia: Many current issues appear with mintages of 5,000 pieces. At just one-fifth of that, this Pfennig is strictly limited and considerably scarcer.
- Compared to a silver coin of the same size: Copper impresses with its warm tone and is easily accessible for beginners. Silver has a cooler shine and often appeals more to collectors focused on the metal itself.
- Compared to the original Pfennig: Almost everyone knows the historical Pfennig from mintages in the millions. The new edition, by contrast, is a genuine very low mintage piece made of solid fine copper.
A small care note: the antique patina is intentional. The coin should therefore not be cleaned; it is best to handle it only by the edge or with cotton gloves.
A Must-Have for Lovers of German Coin History
This 5 oz Copper Pfennig 2026 makes a centerpiece for a Pfennig or D-Mark collection, serves as a nostalgic gift, and also cuts a fine figure as a showpiece on a shelf. It combines memory, craftsmanship, and a worldwide limited mintage. Anyone looking for a small edition with great recognition value will find here a piece with history.
