The design

Designed by Wade Robinson.

Robinson designed his first lunar coin in 2004, a gold coin for the Year of the Monkey. It was also the first coin he ever bought: a gift to celebrate his son’s lunar birth year.

In the Chinese calendar

The Year of the Goat.

According to Chinese tradition, the emperor had all the animals race for the twelve places in the calendar. Behind the horse, which came seventh, the goat travelled with the monkey and the rooster. Together the three crossed a wide river; the goat led the way and came eighth. Those born in its year are believed to be calm, compassionate and creative.

The mint

A P from Perth.

The Perth Mint has been striking coins in Western Australia since 1899, at first as a branch of the Royal Mint. Its sovereigns bore a small P beneath St George and the Dragon. The mark returned in 1986, and today it appears on all of The Perth Mint’s own coins. Since 1970, the mint has belonged to the State of Western Australia.

  • The P of The Perth Mint

The Perth Mint’s first Lunar Series began with the 1996 coins, the first of its kind in Australia. The third series started with the Mouse coins of 2020, and the goat is its eighth animal. The design also holds a tiny micro-engraved letter, visible only under a magnifying glass. It is meant to make the coin significantly harder to counterfeit.

Some coins you simply buy. Others you search for over years. The 1 oz Platinum Lunar III Goat 2027 clearly belongs to the latter category, as the Perth Mint has limited the mintage of this platinum coin to a maximum of 5,000 pieces. For comparison: up to 30,000 pieces of the 1-ounce gold coin with the identical design are produced, and the silver version is minted in quantities as high as 300,000. Anyone who owns the Lunar Goat in platinum therefore holds by far the rarest ounce version of this year's issue.

The design: Gentleness meets steadfastness

The Goat is the eighth sign in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle. According to an old legend, the Jade Emperor invited all animals to a great race. Together with the Monkey and the Rooster, the Goat crossed a wide river and was the first of its small group to reach the other shore. Those born in 2027, 2015, 2003, 1991 or 1979 are considered gentle, creative and compassionate. These individuals are said to have a calm nature, resilience and artistic talent.

It is precisely this calmness that designer Wade Robinson captures, whose initials "WR" can be discreetly discovered in the rock. The obverse shows a proud goat with long, curved horns and a flowing coat, standing on rocky ground. In the background, a gnarled tree rises from the stone. In the upper right, the Chinese character for Goat and the inscription "GOAT 2027" are displayed, while the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint sits on the left. The reverse bears the portrait of King Charles III based on a design by Dan Thorne, framed by "CHARLES III AUSTRALIA", "1oz 9995 Pt" and "100 DOLLARS".

A detail for connoisseurs: hidden within the design is a micro-engraved security feature in the form of a letter. It is only visible under a magnifying glass and makes counterfeiting significantly more difficult.

Lunar Series III: A collection that grows year by year

Since 2020, the Perth Mint's third Lunar Series has accompanied the Chinese calendar. The series began with the Mouse. It was followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake and finally the Lunar Horse 2026. With the Goat – internationally known as the "Year of the Goat" – the eighth chapter of designs has now been released. For collectors looking to build a complete series in platinum, this Lunar year is an indispensable addition. Due to the strict limitation, it is also unlikely to remain freely available for long.

The metal itself lends the coin additional depth. Platinum has been known for over 2,000 years and has always served as a store of value. It possesses an intrinsic value that has never fallen to zero and enjoys high recognition worldwide within industry. As a means of payment, it was never as widespread as gold. It is precisely this exclusivity that makes platinum coins with Lunar designs something special in any collection of high-quality precious metals.

Perth Mint: The art of minting with tradition

The Perth Mint has been striking coins since 1899 and is today regarded as one of the most respected mints in the world. Its Lunar series have set standards: a clear annual structure, meticulous design and reliable quality. Many collectors follow each new issue with great anticipation. It is therefore no surprise that the strictly limited platinum versions in particular are in especially high demand.

Gold, silver or platinum – which Goat is right for you?

  • Silver: affordable entry point, very high mintage, ideal for beginners.
  • Gold: widely recognized, valued around the world, though significantly more pieces in circulation.
  • Platinum: compact format, high material value and a very low mintage – the most exclusive choice.

Anyone seeking exclusivity will find it in the Platinum Goat. In its original coin capsule, the Brilliant Uncirculated surface remains perfectly protected. This way, this collector's coin will still shine like new even after many years. Secure this rarity from Australia before all 5,000 pieces have disappeared into permanent collections.
