The design

Designed by Natasha Muhl.

Natasha Muhl’s lunar work began with the goat in 2015, when she designed both the gold and the silver Year of the Goat coins. Telling the tale of the goat again in 2027 has been a pleasure, she says.

In the Chinese calendar

The Year of the Goat.

According to Chinese tradition, the emperor had all the animals race for the twelve places in the calendar. Behind the horse, which came seventh, the goat travelled with the monkey and the rooster. Together the three crossed a wide river; the goat led the way and came eighth. Those born in its year are believed to be calm, compassionate and creative.

The mint

A P from Perth.

The Perth Mint has been striking coins in Western Australia since 1899, at first as a branch of the Royal Mint. Its sovereigns bore a small P beneath St George and the Dragon. The mark returned in 1986, and today it appears on all of The Perth Mint’s own coins. Since 1970, the mint has belonged to the State of Western Australia.

  • The inscription GOAT 2027
  • The P of The Perth Mint

The Perth Mint’s first Lunar Series began with the 1996 coins, the first of its kind in Australia. The third series started with the Mouse coins of 2020, and the goat is its eighth animal. The design also holds a tiny micro-engraved letter, visible only under a magnifying glass. It is meant to make the coin significantly harder to counterfeit.

2 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 – two troy ounces of lunar calendar you can hold in your hand

Eighth zodiac sign, eighth chapter: with the Lunar year 2027, the Goat takes centre stage in Australia's most successful bullion series. The 2 oz Silver Lunar III Goat 2027 from the Silver Lunar Series III brings 62.21 grams of fine silver to an impressive 50.80 millimetre diameter – a format with real weight in the hand and striking presence in any collector's cabinet.

  • Investment goal: bullion coin for wealth preservation and inflation hedge, as a tangible asset also a reliable form of crisis protection
  • Design: three goats by the water, a blossoming plum branch, the Chinese character for Goat, and the inscription "GOAT 2027"
  • Material / fineness: fine silver 999.9/1,000 – the highest purity commonly used in bullion minting, with no alloy additive
  • Mint: Perth Mint, one of the most renowned mints in the world
  • Country of origin: Australia, face value 2 AUD

"Three goats bring good fortune" – the design in detail

The design side tells a small story: a mature goat watches vigilantly from a rocky outcrop, a billy goat rests by the water, and between them a curious kid stands by. This trio echoes the old saying of the three goats that bring good fortune – a symbol for the end of winter, the arrival of spring, and an auspicious new beginning. The plum blossom branch on the right represents purity, hope, and resilience. The scene is completed by the Chinese character for Goat, the inscription "GOAT 2027", and the coveted "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint.

The value side bears the portrait of King Charles III designed by Dan Thorne, the country name Australia, and all the key details in short form: 2 oz, 9999 Ag, and 2 Dollars. Both sides are struck in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) quality and delivered in a coin capsule that protects the fine relief edges.

Perth Mint: craftsmanship with over 125 years of tradition

Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint is one of the oldest mints still in operation in the world and is renowned for its exceptionally clean relief work. The Australian Lunar Series III began in 2020 with the Mouse and runs through 2031 – after the Snake in 2025 and the Horse in 2026, it is now the Year of the Goat. One key appeal of the series: each year's design is struck for just a single year, after which the motif moves irrevocably into the archive. While the 1 oz unit carries a mintage limit of 300,000 pieces, the larger units such as the 2 oz coin are not capped by a fixed limit – the actual mintage is determined solely by demand in the year of issue, and for the larger formats this has historically always been considerably lower than for the one-ounce coin.

Why the 2 oz unit in particular?

Between the widely available 1 oz coin and the heavier 5 oz or kilo issues, the 2 oz variant is an in-between format with its own character. It presents the design more generously than the one-ounce coin, while remaining manageable and liquid.

  • Design impact: more surface area, finer details, bolder relief
  • Scarcer supply: historically significantly lower mintage figures than the 1 oz unit
  • Double substance: two troy ounces in a single piece – fewer capsules, more compact storage
  • Bullion rather than Proof: Brilliant Uncirculated striking close to material value, without the effort of a collector's edition
  • Clear comparison: while the Kookaburra or Koala also appear in 2 oz, the Lunar series scores with its annually changing zodiac design and strong collector appeal across Asia

Silver as a foundation – arguments that endure

This issue belongs to those silver coins that fulfil two roles at once: collector's item and investment product. Silver has been the everyday coinage metal for thousands of years, a symbol of prosperity and a recognised medium of exchange – especially for smaller transactions and in times of unstable currencies. Unlike fiat money, whose value depends on trust in governments, the metal possesses an intrinsic value derived from its physical properties.

Added to this is the industrial dimension: electronics, solar technology, and medical technology continuously consume silver, while the extractable supply remains limited. Physical silver is durable, tradable worldwide as a commodity, and highly liquid. And one point many investors appreciate: in Germany, profits from its sale are generally tax-free, provided a minimum holding period of one year is observed.

Precious metal outlasts currencies – anyone who thinks in terms of fine silver today is not planning in quarters, but in generations.

This makes the Lunar III Goat 2027 more than just a beautiful silver coin: a building block that, year after year, forms part of a complete series and can be passed down through generations.
