The design

Designed by Natasha Muhl.

Natasha Muhl’s lunar work began with the goat in 2015, when she designed both the gold and the silver Year of the Goat coins. Telling the tale of the goat again in 2027 has been a pleasure, she says.

In the Chinese calendar

The Year of the Goat.

According to Chinese tradition, the emperor had all the animals race for the twelve places in the calendar. Behind the horse, which came seventh, the goat travelled with the monkey and the rooster. Together the three crossed a wide river; the goat led the way and came eighth. Those born in its year are believed to be calm, compassionate and creative.

The mint

A P from Perth.

The Perth Mint has been striking coins in Western Australia since 1899, at first as a branch of the Royal Mint. Its sovereigns bore a small P beneath St George and the Dragon. The mark returned in 1986, and today it appears on all of The Perth Mint’s own coins. Since 1970, the mint has belonged to the State of Western Australia.

The Perth Mint’s first Lunar Series began with the 1996 coins, the first of its kind in Australia. The third series started with the Mouse coins of 2020, and the goat is its eighth animal.

Anyone who collects the Lunar series knows this feeling. Every year, collectors eagerly await the next animal from the Chinese calendar, and in 2027 the spotlight belongs to the Goat. This variant has a very low mintage of a maximum of 7,500 pieces. No further examples will be minted.

"Three goats bring luck": The design in detail

Designer Natasha Muhl, whose initials "NM" appear in the lower left of the coin's field, draws on an old Chinese proverb about luck. According to it, three goats symbolise the end of winter, the beginning of spring, and a promising new start. The obverse therefore depicts an entire goat family:

  • The black goat: It stands proudly in the centre on a rock. Its coat is coloured in blue-black, with short, backward-curving horns, amber eyes and light grey legs.
  • The kid: On the left, a playful brown-and-white young goat prances on its hind legs.
  • The reclining goat: In the foreground on the right rests a cream to golden-yellow animal with long, curved horns and a small chin beard.

In the background stand frosted mountains, with flowing wave lines forming the ground. In the upper right, a blossoming plum branch extends into the design. In Chinese tradition, it symbolises purity, resilience and hope. Above it are the Chinese character 羊 (goat), the inscription "GOAT 2027" and the Perth Mint's "P" mint mark. The contrast is striking: coloured animals, frosted matte reliefs and a mirrored coin field that appears almost black depending on the angle of light.

The reverse features the portrait of King Charles III, designed by Dan Thorne. It is surrounded by the inscriptions "CHARLES III AUSTRALIA", "1oz 9999 Ag" and "1 DOLLAR".

The Silver Lunar Series III: Tradition since 1996

The Perth Mint was the first mint to launch an Australian Lunar programme in 1996. Following Series I (1996–2007) and Series II (2008–2019), the Silver Lunar Series III continues this tradition, with twelve annual releases representing the twelve zodiac signs of the Chinese horoscope. According to legend, the goat finished eighth in the Emperor's Great Race, right after the horse. People born in the year of the goat are considered creative, gentle and compassionate. The coin therefore also makes an excellent gift for anyone born under the sign of the goat in 2015, 2003 or 1991.

Coloured Proof or another variant?

The Goat 2027 is available in several versions. The plain Proof silver coin appeals to purists who prefer pure silver brilliance. The gilded version is considerably more common, with a maximum mintage of 25,000 pieces. The Brilliant Uncirculated bullion edition is aimed at investors who want to buy as close to the silver price as possible. Those seeking the design in gold will also find it as a gold coin in Proof quality.

The coloured Proof edition combines precious metal with artwork. Its premium over the bullion version results from the design, minting quality and the limited mintage. It is precisely this scarcity that, for many collectors, defines the value appreciation potential of such Lunar designs. A care tip: colour applications and mirror finishes are delicate. It is best to handle the coin only with cotton gloves and to keep it in its display stand.

Why silver? A metal with history and a future

Silver has been a monetary metal, a medium of exchange and a symbol of prosperity for thousands of years. Unlike paper money, it has an intrinsic value that does not depend on trust in governments. At the same time, industrial demand is growing, for example in electronics, solar technology and medical technology, while supply remains limited. Silver is durable, tradable worldwide and can be converted into cash quickly. It is also significantly cheaper than gold. In Germany, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This makes silver a suitable asset to pass on across generations.

One troy ounce of fine silver, a lucky symbol from the Chinese calendar, and a mintage of only 7,500 pieces: this coin combines wealth preservation with the joy of collecting.
